"It still works though." That is the trap
The most expensive liquid damage we see is not the laptop that died on the spot. It is the one that kept working. The spill got wiped up, the machine ran fine, and everyone relaxed. Then a week or a month later it started acting strange and finally would not turn on, because the corrosion never stopped. It sat under the chips, quietly eating traces, until something critical gave way. By then a straightforward cleaning has become component-by-component board repair.
If liquid got inside, a working device is a device on a countdown, and an inspection now is dramatically cheaper than a rescue later. These are the signs liquid reached the board even when everything seems fine:
Keys sticky, repeating, or dead
The keyboard sits directly over the spill path on most laptops.

What proper liquid damage repair looks like
Drying a device out is not a repair. The liquid leaves conductive residue and starts corrosion that keeps eating the board long after everything feels dry, which is why the "it worked for a week then died" story is so common. The real process: full disassembly with the board out, ultrasonic cleaning to strip residue and corrosion, inspection under magnification along every path the liquid took, then component-level replacement of whatever the liquid killed, the same micro soldering work we do on logic boards every day. Done properly it takes 1 to 3 days.

Device-specific realities
MacBooks
The keyboard is the front door: a spill on the deck drains straight onto the logic board and battery connector underneath. Backlight circuits and keyboard flex cables are usually the first casualties, and Apple's answer to any of it is typically a whole top case or logic board swap at $800 to $1,500. Our chip-level repair usually lands at $399 to $799, and on Apple Silicon Macs we work carefully around the soldered storage so your data survives the repair.
iPhones and iPads
Water resistant is not waterproof, and the seals age with every year and every drop. Pool and ocean exposure is the classic: the phone works at the beach, dies on the drive home. If your iPhone met salt water, rinse-free time matters most, power it off and come straight in. A phone that got wet and now runs hot or drains fast has a corrosion draw on the board, the earlier it is cleaned, the more of the board we save.

When the device is gone, the data usually is not
Here is the part most repair shops never mention: your files live on storage chips that often survive a spill even when the power circuitry dies. If the repair math does not make sense, we shift to data recovery, pulling your photos, documents, and work off the board, including MacBooks with storage soldered down. Liquid damage questions
I just spilled on my laptop. What do I do right now?+
Three things, in order. Power it off completely, hold the button if you have to. Unplug the charger and everything else. Then get it to a bench as fast as you can, ideally the same day. Do not charge it, do not power it on to check, and do not put it in rice. What kills liquid-damaged devices is electricity flowing through wet circuits and corrosion eating the board while you wait.
Does the rice trick work?+
No. Rice does not pull moisture out of a sealed device, it just wastes the days that matter most. While the device sits in the bag, corrosion is spreading across the board and mineral deposits are forming under chips. The honest fix is disassembly, proper cleaning, and inspection, and the sooner that happens the better the odds.
How much does liquid damage repair cost?+
Real published ranges: iPhone water damage recovery typically runs $199 to $399, and MacBook liquid damage with chip-level repair runs $399 to $799 depending on how far the damage spread. You get a written quote after inspection and nothing starts until you approve it. Is the diagnostic free for liquid damage?+

Full disassembly, board out. Ultrasonic cleaning to strip the residue and corrosion, then inspection under magnification, chip by chip, on the power rails and connectors the liquid reached. It takes 1 to 3 days done properly, and anyone promising same-day liquid damage repair is skipping steps.
My device will not turn on after the spill. Is my data gone?+
Usually not, and this matters more than the device. Your files live on the storage chips, which often survive even when the power circuitry dies. If the device is not worth repairing, we can usually still recover the data, including from MacBooks with storage soldered to the board. Salt water, coffee, or wine, does it matter what spilled?+
Yes. Clean water is the kindest, coffee and soda leave conductive sticky residue, and salt water is the most aggressive, it corrodes boards in hours rather than days. Anything other than clean water raises the urgency. Whatever it was, power off and come in, and tell us what spilled so the cleaning matches the chemistry.
