iPhone 18 Pro Is Here at $1,199. Upgrade, Repair, or Sell?

What Launched, and the Detail Everyone Missed

The headline iPhones, with Apple's announced prices and dates:

Now the part that got buried. There is no standard iPhone 18 this fall. Apple's lineup today reads iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone Air, iPhone 17, iPhone 17e, and iPhone 16. The non-Pro 18 is simply absent, with reports pointing to a spring 2027 debut.

For years the upgrade ritual had a comfortable middle rung: a new non-Pro iPhone at the familiar price. This year that rung is missing. The cheapest way into this year's generation is the 18 Pro at $1,199, which is $100 more than the iPhone 17 Pro started at last year. There are still cheaper new iPhones on the shelf, but they are previous-generation models, and buying one is a different decision than upgrading.

So the honest framing for anyone holding a working-but-tired iPhone is not "new phone or old phone." It is "spend $1,199 and up, or spend a small fraction of that keeping a phone you already like."

Repair Cost vs. New iPhone, Charted

These are our published repair prices next to this year's launch prices. The scale is the argument:

A battery is a rounding error against a new phone. Even the most expensive screen we quote, a 14 or 15 Pro at $249 to $329, is roughly a quarter of the cheapest current-generation iPhone. That does not mean nobody should upgrade. It means the upgrade should be something you want, not something a $79 battery talked you into.

The Three Clocks Running on Your Current iPhone

Every phone has three countdowns going at once, and launch week moves all three. Knowing which one is actually running out on your phone answers the whole question.

The resale clock

This is the one that moves fastest right now. Every launch sends a wave of used phones into the market at once, and used prices follow supply. If selling is already your plan, doing it early in the cycle generally beats doing it in December. This is the one clock where waiting has a real cost.

The battery clock

Most phones that feel "ready to replace" are not slow or broken. They are running a battery at the end of its life, which causes the exact symptoms people read as old age: dying at 30 percent, shutting down in the cold, feeling tethered to a charger. Open Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health and Charging. Under 80 percent maximum capacity, or a message about service, means the battery is the problem. Ours run $69 to $89 for most models, done in 30 to 60 minutes while you wait.

The support clock

The slowest of the three. Apple has historically supported iPhones with software updates for many years after release, so a phone from the last several generations is usually nowhere near its cutoff. Check whether your model is still getting iOS updates before you let anyone tell you it is obsolete. When this clock genuinely runs out, that is a real reason to replace a phone. It is also the rarest of the three.

The Decision Table

The rule underneath the table is the same one we apply to laptops: a repair is worth it when it costs less than about half of what replacing the device would. The iPhone Duo, From a Repair Bench

The foldable is the real news today, and it deserves more than a price tag. We fix phones for a living, so we read a spec sheet differently than a reviewer does. Here is what stands out, starting with credit where it is due.

What Apple actually engineered

The enclosure is grade 5 titanium. The hinge, in Apple's words, is "engineered from more than 100 components to precisely control opening and closing." The folding display is a laminated stack rather than a single pane: custom adhesives let the layers "glide past one another like the pages of a book," which is how you relieve bend stress instead of fighting it. The cover layer is a nano-textured polymer Apple says is up to 40 percent stiffer than what the industry has been using. It carries an IP68 rating, and there are two batteries, one on each side. Inner display 7.6 inches, outer 5.4 inches.

That is a serious piece of engineering, and the IP68 rating on a device with a hinge is genuinely impressive.

Three things a repair bench notices

1. It is the first iPhone with a large moving assembly. Over 100 components exist to control one motion, performed several times a day for years. Moving parts wear in a way that solid-state parts do not. That is not a design flaw, it is mechanics, and it is new territory for iPhone.

2. The inner display is a laminated stack, not a pane of glass. This is the part with real cost consequences. Samsung publishes US repair pricing for its foldables, and on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 an inner screen replacement runs $579 while the outer screen runs $139. Roughly four times the price for the folding side, on a shipping product from a company on its eighth generation of doing this. That gap comes from how a folding display is built, not from branding. Apple has not published Duo pricing, so we are not going to put a number on it.

3. Apple did not publish a fold-cycle rating. Samsung rates the Z Fold 8 at 500,000 folds. Apple's public claim is that the hinge offers "smooth, balanced resistance for long-lasting reliability," which is a feel description rather than a number. That may simply be Apple declining to compete on a spec it finds unhelpful. It is still the closest thing to a number on hinge life, and today Apple has not given one.

What nobody can tell you yet, including us

It ships October 23. There are no teardowns and no parts catalog, we have not serviced one, and neither has any independent shop. Apple has not published out-of-warranty repair pricing for it. Anyone claiming today to know how the Duo holds up after a year in a pocket with keys and lint is guessing, and the crease question in particular gets answered by time, not by a demo table. Apple's nano-texture finish is designed to minimize how visible the crease is, and hands-on reporting today shows it is still a crease.

If you are preordering one (Duo preorders open October 16, delivery October 23)

• Run the AppleCare math differently than you would on a normal iPhone. On a $1,999 device with no published repair price to compare against, coverage is a different calculation than it is on a phone whose screen repair market is already established.
• Treat the inner display as coated polymer, not glass. Apple built a nano-textured cover layer, which is not the surface you scrub or stick a rigid protector onto. Handle it the way you would any coated display.
• Keep grit out of the hinge. IP68 covers dust and water, which is reassuring. It does not make a pocket full of sand a good idea for a mechanism with over 100 parts.
• Two batteries means two things aging. Battery life on paper is excellent, up to 31 hours of video on the inner screen. Years from now, service on a dual-battery foldable will be a bigger job than the 30 to 60 minute battery swap we do on a normal iPhone.

Our position, plainly: we do component-level iPhone repair, we intend to service the Duo, and we will tell you exactly what we can and cannot do on one after we have had it apart, not before. If you want a shop that already claims foldable expertise on launch day, that shop has not seen one either.

Apple Trade In vs. Selling for Cash

If you are upgrading, the phone in your hand is worth something. How much, and in what form, depends on where it goes.

Apple Trade In is convenient and legitimate, and for a working recent iPhone you are replacing with another Apple product it is often the simplest path. Two things about it are worth knowing before you count on a number. First, Apple pays in credit, applied to your purchase, your monthly payments, your Apple Account balance, or an Apple Gift Card. It is not cash in your pocket. Second, Apple does not publish a value for your specific phone up front; its own page says the amount "depends on the device, model, manufacturer, and condition."

The bigger gap shows up when the phone is damaged. Apple's trade-in page is direct about what happens to a device that does not qualify: "If your device isn't eligible for Trade-In, we'll recycle it for free. No matter the model or condition." Free recycling is a genuinely good thing for the planet. It is also zero dollars for you.

That is the case where a local shop with a repair bench pays differently. Because we fix phones at the component level, a cracked, water-damaged, or dead iPhone is not scrap to us, it is inventory. We buy used and broken devices, quote within 24 hours, and pay the same day in cash, Zelle, or check. The straight comparison: working and recent, get both offers and take the better one. Cracked or dead, we are usually the only side of the table with a number on it.

What to Do This Week

Preorders open September 12 and phones land September 18, so there is a real window here. Five minutes of homework before you commit:

1. Check Battery Health. Settings, Battery, Battery Health and Charging. If maximum capacity is under 80 percent, you have been living with a battery problem, not an old phone.
2. Check your storage. Settings, General, iPhone Storage. A phone that feels slow and full is sometimes just full.
3. Back up before you do anything. iCloud or a computer. Do this whether you are repairing, selling, or upgrading.
4. Get both numbers in one visit. What a repair costs and what the phone is worth as-is. You cannot compare paths without both, and the diagnostic is free.
5. If you are selling, sign out first. Settings, your name, Sign Out clears Activation Lock. A locked iPhone is worth a fraction of an unlocked one to any buyer, and because we buy only from legal owners, a still-locked phone also needs proof of ownership.
