The iPhone Duo went on sale today, October 23, 2026, on apple.com and at select carriers and partner stores, at $1,999 to $3,199. The question we have been asked since the September keynote is what one costs to fix. As of this week there is an answer for the Apple side of it: Apple has listed estimated service costs for the Duo on its support site, and a service center has had one apart. This post lays out Apple's price table, how it compares to a regular iPhone and to Samsung's foldable, what the first teardown shows, how AppleCare+ changes the math, and what an independent shop can and cannot do for a foldable iPhone today.

When Apple announced the Duo on September 9 we wrote a repair-bench read on it in our launch postand declined to guess at repair pricing, because there was none. The guessing is over. What follows uses Apple's listing, iFixit's reporting, Samsung's published pricing, and the Kingmi Mobile teardown as reported by Notebookcheck, with each figure attributed where it appears.

Already Have a Duo With a Problem?

Bring it in. We will look at it at no charge (liquid damage excepted, as on every phone) and tell you plainly what failed and whether Apple is the only realistic place to fix it right now.

What Apple Charges to Fix an iPhone Duo

Apple lists estimated service costs for the iPhone Duo on its support site. Notebookcheck reported the figures on October 14, 2026, citing Apple, and iFixit compared them on October 20. When we checked Apple's own pricing tool on launch day it was not loading, so the table below is Apple's listing as iFixit reported it. Apple's own estimate tool is at support.apple.com/iphone/repair; if it loads for you, its number for your exact phone beats this table.

DamageOut of warrantyWith AppleCare+
Cover layer damage$49$19
Back glass damage$199$29
Battery service$229$0
Rear camera damage$229Not in iFixit's report; Apple's general schedule: $99 for other accidental damage
Outer display damage$379$29
Outer display and back glass$509Not in iFixit's report; Apple's general schedule: $29 to $99 for displays and back glass
Inner display damage$999$99
Other damage$1,499$99

Two notes on reading it. Apple says the estimates are not final: it inspects the device before quoting, and tax may apply. And the last row is the one to understand before buying the phone. "Other damage" is Apple's catchall for anything that is not one of the named rows. A hinge has no named row in this table, so our reading is that a hinge job lands here, and Apple decides after inspection. That line is $1,499 on a phone that starts at $1,999.

The $49 cover layer line is new. No regular iPhone has one. It is the matte protective film on the inner display, and the teardown section below explains why it earned its own row.

How That Compares to a Regular iPhone

Chart of out-of-warranty repair prices: Computer Clinic Irvine's published regular iPhone screens $89 to $189 for X through 13 and $169 to $329 for 14 and 15 including Pro and batteries $69 to $89, next to Apple's listed iPhone Duo service costs of $49 for the cover layer, $229 for battery service, $379 for the outer display, $999 for the inner display, and $1,499 for other damage, Apple's $329 iPhone 18 Pro display, and Samsung's $579 Galaxy Z Fold 8 inner display
Blue is our published regular-iPhone pricing. Gold is the manufacturer's listed service price: Apple's estimated service costs as reported October 20, 2026, and Samsung's published US pricing for the Galaxy Z Fold 8. AppleCare+ fees are far lower and are in the table above.

Start with Apple against Apple. For the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple lists $329 for the "outer (or only) display" and $419 for "front display and back glass." The Duo's inner display is $999, roughly three times the 18 Pro's screen. The Duo's outer display alone is $379, which is more than the 18 Pro's only display. Battery service on the Duo is $229. Apple's listing does not say whether that covers one battery or both; the teardown shows there are two, and reaching either is a disassembly job.

Then Apple against Samsung, which is on its eighth generation of foldables. Samsung's published US pricingis $579 for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 inner screen and $139 for the outer. Apple's inner display is $420 more than Samsung's, and Apple's outer display is $240 more.

Then our bench. Our published regular iPhone screens run $89 to $189 for iPhone X through 13 and $169 to $329 for 14 and 15 including Pro, done in 30 to 60 minutes while you wait. Batteries run $69 to $89. Board-level iPhone repair runs $149 to $349 and water damage recovery $199 to $399. Those are the prices a regular iPhone owner puts next to Apple's, and that comparison is the reason independent shops exist.

For Duo owners: nobody independent can quote a Duo display today. There is no parts supply outside Apple, so there is no independent price to set beside the $999. That row of the chart has one entry, Apple's, and it stays that way until parts exist. We are not going to fill it with a guess.

What the First Teardown Shows

Kingmi Mobile, a service center, took a pre-release iPhone Duo apart, and Notebookcheck reported the findings on October 22, 2026. In plain words, this is what they found and what each finding means for a repair bill.

  • Two batteries, one in each half. Replacing them means removing both the back panel and the secondary display first. Kingmi called the battery job "relatively time-consuming." That is the work behind Apple's $229 battery line, and it is nothing like the 30 to 60 minute battery swap on a regular iPhone.
  • Thin folded ribbon cables. Components such as the selfie camera connect to the mainboard over thin folded ribbons, and Kingmi says they raise the risk of damage during repair.
  • A fair amount is modular. Many components can be replaced individually, including the two selfie cameras, the dual rear camera, and the mainboard.
  • The matte film and the crease. The matte protective film on the inner display is not officially user-replaceable, but it peels off easily. The display beneath it is glossy like the Galaxy Z Fold 8's, and the crease is much more visible without the film. The film can be replaced at an Apple Store, which is the $49 cover layer line in Apple's table.
  • The hinge and the folding display are the long jobs. Kingmi called hinge and foldable display replacement "extremely time-consuming." Those are the two jobs Apple's $999 inner display line and, by our reading, its $1,499 other damage line are priced for.

iFixit has not published a teardown or a repairability score for the Duo. It said it will assess repairability when it gets a unit. What iFixit has published is context. On September 9, 2026, it noted that its guide for replacing the inner screen on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold runs over 200 steps and that it estimates 3 to 5 hours for an experienced repair person. It wrote that "hinges are still the Achilles heel of foldable durability," with dust as the reason, and that the latest Pixel Fold scored 4 out of 10. Of the Duo it said, "This one probably won't be fixable," and then, "We'd love for Apple to prove us wrong."

The fold tests

Two machine tests have been published since the review units went out, and they answer different questions. Joanna Stern ran her review unit through more than 32,000 folds over four nights on a custom rig, with a case on; the rig opened the phone flat but did not close it all the way each time. A calibrated push-pull gauge read the hinge as stiffer afterward than before, and she wrote that in everyday use she could not feel a difference, as reported by MacRumors on October 21, 2026. She did not comment on the crease.

The crease is what the second test looked at. A YouTuber, Tim Pan, ran a Duo through 10,500 continuous folds on an automated machine at room temperature and then 1,000 more cycles in a freezer at -4°F, as reported by Android Authority on October 22, 2026. The hinge kept opening smoothly and nothing failed, but the display crease had visibly deepened compared with the first fold. Neither test is a repair finding; what they tell a buyer is that the hinge is holding up early and the crease is the part that changes with use, which is also why the matte film sits over it.

On October 20, 2026, with Apple's prices in hand, iFixit added that "that hinge mechanism and the multi-layer screen are both untested in the real world." In the same piece iFixit quoted Apple VP Tom Marieb telling journalists to "Hold us accountable" on the crease.

The AppleCare+ Math on a Duo

With AppleCare+, Apple's listing drops the same repairs to a service fee: inner display $99, outer display $29, back glass $29, battery service $0, cover layer $19, other damage $99. Apple's AppleCare+ page says that "For iPhone Duo, a separate service fee applies for the replacement of the cover layer," which is why the $19 line exists at all. Apple's general schedule is $29 to $99 for damaged displays, back glass, or Ceramic Shield, and $99 for other accidental damage such as liquid damage.

Apple's own AppleCare page would not render the plan price for us at publication. Notebookcheck, citing Apple, reported it on October 14, 2026: AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss for the iPhone Duo at $19.99 a month, $199.99 a year, or $399 as a one-time payment. We have not seen the price of the plain AppleCare+ tier without theft and loss, so we are not stating one. Apple does say that "For 60 days after a new Apple purchase, you can get a new plan through the Settings app," so a Duo bought today has until late December to decide.

On most phones AppleCare+ is a judgment call. A $69 to $89 battery or an $89 to $189 screen at our bench is cheap enough that plenty of people carry the risk themselves. On a phone where the inner display is $999, the catchall line is $1,499, and no independent shop can quote either, it is a different calculation. The gap between $999 and $99 is the number that matters. What you do with it is yours to decide; we repair phones, we do not sell plans.

What We Can Do Today, and What We Will Not Pretend To

Computer Clinic Irvine has not serviced an iPhone Duo. We do component-level iPhone repair, and we expect to service the Duo as parts and documentation become available. Both sentences were in our September post, and both are still true.

What we can do today is look at one. Bring any Duo in and we will examine it at no charge, with the same exception that applies to every phone we see: liquid damage takes lab time to assess and carries a diagnostic fee if you do not go ahead with a repair. We will tell you plainly what failed and whether Apple is the only realistic path for it. For the inner display, the hinge, and the cover layer, Apple is that path today, because no independent parts supply exists for any of the three. We will say so at the counter rather than take the phone in and find out later.

We will publish our own Duo pricing only when we have had units on the bench and a parts source exists. Until then there is no Duo price anywhere on this site.

If you want a second opinion on what failed before you book with Apple, bring it to us for the free diagnostic. Regular iPhones are a different story: screens, batteries, charging ports, water damage, and board-level work are on our iPhone and iPad repair page with published prices, most done the same day.

A Duo Is Not the Only iPhone That Broke This Week

Cracked screen or tired battery on an iPhone X through 15? Those have published prices, and most are done in 30 to 60 minutes while you wait.

What to Do in the First Month

Six things, each tied to a line in Apple's table or a finding in the teardown.

  1. Keep the film on. The Kingmi teardown found the matte film peels easily and that the crease is much more visible without it. It is the $49 line out of warranty, $19 with AppleCare+. Leave it alone, and do not put a rigid protector over it.
  2. Put it in a case on day one. Apple lists back glass damage at $199 out of warranty and the outer display at $379. A case costs less than any line in that table.
  3. Keep grit out of the hinge. iFixit's position is that hinges are the Achilles heel of foldable durability, with dust as the reason. A pocket with sand or keys is where a hinge collects wear, and a hinge problem is not a named line in Apple's table, which leaves the $1,499 catchall as the row we expect it to fall under.
  4. Back it up now. iCloud or a computer. Every service path for this phone runs through Apple today, and we cannot promise data recovery on a Duo.
  5. Decide on AppleCare+ inside 60 days. Apple's page says a new plan can be added through the Settings app for 60 days after purchase. After that the out-of-warranty column is the only column.
  6. Read the IP68 footnote. Apple's page says the resistance is not permanent and that liquid damage is not covered under warranty. With AppleCare+, Apple's schedule puts liquid damage under other accidental damage at a $99 fee.
