What Laptop Repair Actually Costs in 2026
Search "laptop repair cost" and you get two useless answers: content farms quoting "$50 to $1,000 depending on the issue," and shops that will not print a number until you are standing at the counter. Neither helps you budget. So here are our published prices, the same ones on our price list, with an explanation of what pushes a quote toward the top or bottom of each range.
The numbers come from the bench at Computer Clinic Irvine. Your local market may differ a little, but the ranges and the logic behind them travel: what you are paying for is parts plus careful labor, and once you understand which repairs are which, no shop can surprise you.

The Price Ranges, Charted
You came for numbers, so numbers first. These are our published ranges, and the full list lives on our repair prices page:

Two things jump out. Most laptop problems land in the $89 to $299 band, far below the "just buy a new one" threshold. And the expensive end of the chart is board-level work, which has its own decision process we covered in the motherboard repair vs. replacement guide.
Why Every Price Is a Range
A range is not a shop hedging. It is three variables:
- The part. A basic 1080p laptop panel and a 4K touch panel are both "a screen," at very different part costs. Same for batteries, keyboards, and SSDs of different sizes.
- The design. Some laptops open with ten screws. Others hide the battery under a glued keyboard deck. Labor follows disassembly difficulty, which is decided by the manufacturer, not the shop.
- What the diagnostic finds. "It is slow" can be a $149 SSD upgrade or malware plus a failing drive. The free diagnostic pins it down before you commit, which is why the quote you approve is exact even though the published price is a range.
Repair by Repair: What You Are Paying For
Screen replacement: $150 to $400
The panel is most of the price. Standard 1080p panels sit at the low end; high-resolution, touch, and high-refresh panels climb from there. If the lid or hinges are bent from the same drop that cracked the screen, that is a separate conversation at the diagnostic, not a surprise on the invoice.
The "it is slow" fix: SSD upgrade, $149 to $349 with parts and install
The most common laptop complaint is not a broken part at all. A laptop that takes minutes to boot and freezes between clicks is usually running on a worn drive, and an SSD upgrade with your data migrated over is the highest-value repair on the whole menu. A typical 500GB to 1TB job lands at $199 to $249. Details on our hardware upgrades page.
Virus and malware removal: $89 to $149
Pop-ups, browser hijacks, fake "your PC is infected" warnings, a machine that got weird after one download. Cleanup includes making sure it stays clean, and a straight answer on whether anything sensitive was exposed. More on the virus removal page.
Most everything else: $89 to $299
Startup failures, blue screens, Windows problems, charging port issues, fan and overheating service, OS reinstalls (from $99). This band is where most walk-ins land, which surprises people braced for a much bigger number.
The exceptions that run higher
Board-level repair ($349 to $599 for MacBook logic boards, quoted per fault on Windows machines), liquid damage (cleaning first, then a verdict), and data recovery from failed drives ($149 to $349 for logical recovery, more when hardware has failed). Each of these starts with diagnosis rather than a flat promise, because the price depends on what broke. MacBook repairs follow the same logic with their own parts economics; see the Mac repair page for those ranges.

Bring it in. The diagnostic is free, the quote is written, and nothing starts until you approve it.

The rule we use at the counter: repair makes sense when the quote is under half of what a comparable replacement costs, the laptop is under four to five years old, and the machine is otherwise in decent shape. Three additions worth knowing:
- Count the real replacement price. Compare against a laptop of equivalent build and spec, not the $299 doorbuster that would disappoint you in a month.
- Unbacked-up data changes the math. If your files exist only on that laptop, the repair path (or at minimum recovery) protects something a new laptop cannot replace.
- An upgrade can beat both options. A slow but healthy laptop often needs $199 to $249 of SSD, not $1,000 of replacement.
How to Avoid Overpaying Anywhere
Whether you use us or any other shop, these four questions keep quotes honest:
- "Is the diagnostic free, and is the quote written?" A diagnostic fee that "rolls into the repair" pressures you to approve whatever comes next. Free plus written means you can walk away, which keeps the number fair.
- "What exactly failed?" A shop should name the part: this panel, this drive, this charging IC. "It needs a new motherboard" without a named fault often means "we did not diagnose it."
- "What warranty comes with it, in writing?" Parts and labor, with a number of days attached.
- "Is repair the right call at all?" The best answer a shop can give you is sometimes "keep your money." If you never hear it, every quote deserves a second opinion.
