Data Recovery Tustin: What We See on the Bench

Most data recovery in Orange County happens in one of two places. A national lab that handles every case in a cleanroom and charges $1,500 to $5,000+ on every job, or a "we ran a software scan" shop that does not actually open drives. We are the local option in the middle. A real shop in Irvine, 8 minutes from Tustin, that does board-level work, SSD chip transfers, and RAID rebuilds in-house, and uses a cleanroom only when the case actually needs one.

What we actually see come in

A few patterns make up most of the recovery work, and the right thing to do depends on which one your drive falls into.

The clicking drive

Almost always physical. Heads have crashed, the motor is failing, or the bearings have seized. The number one mistake is leaving the drive powered while trying things at home. Every revolution with a damaged head can score more of the platter surface and remove sectors that were recoverable an hour ago. If it clicks, power it off. We do PCB and firmware work in-house. Cases that need cleanroom head replacement go through our partner lab and we quote before any work happens there.

The drive that won't mount

Could be a damaged PCB (board on the bottom of the drive), failed controller, firmware corruption, or file system damage. We have not lost much (yet). The diagnostic tells us which. PCB swaps and firmware fixes are routine work and stay in our $299 to $599 bucket. File system reconstructions usually fall in $149 to $349.

The "I accidentally deleted/formatted it"

This is the cheapest recovery, but timing matters. On a hard drive, deleted files stay on the platter until something else writes over them. If you stopped using the drive the moment you noticed, recovery odds are very high. If you formatted and then ran the drive heavily for two weeks, odds drop. Same day or next day in most cases. $149 to $349.

The SSD that just disappeared

SSDs fail differently than hard drives. The most common SSD failure mode we see is "the drive vanished from BIOS overnight." Often a controller chip on the SSD board has died. Sometimes we can do a NAND chip-off recovery (transfer the memory chips to a working board). This is harder than HDD recovery, $399 to $799 typically. Note: if TRIM has already zeroed your deleted blocks, that data is genuinely gone. We are honest about which window your drive falls into.

The wet drive

Coffee, water bottle, pool, ocean. Don't try to charge it. Don't power it on. Bring it in fast. We ultrasonic-clean the board, replace damaged components at the chip level, then attempt recovery. The longer corrosion sits, the harder the case.

The RAID array or NAS

Most common cases are a degraded RAID 5 where another drive failed during rebuild, a Synology or QNAP where the volume mounts read-only, or a Drobo that one of you tried to manually rebuild. We work with the array as a whole, not just individual drives, which is where most consumer software recovery tools fail. $499 to $1,500 depending on array size and config.

What we can't always do

We are honest at the evaluation about the cases that do not have a happy ending.

SSDs after TRIM has run. The OS has already zeroed the deleted blocks. Software cannot bring them back.

Ransomware-encrypted files without the attacker's key. The encryption is real. We can recover anything the ransomware missed, snapshots, shadow copies, and backups, but the encrypted files themselves are not coming back without the key.

Drives that have been overwritten end-to-end. A full format followed by heavy use overwrites the data. The math is what it is.

Encrypted Apple devices without the passcode. iPhone and iPad encryption is tied to the Secure Enclave. No passcode means no data, regardless of who does the work.

Where recovery is unlikely we say so. You do not pay for the attempt.
